Mod Podge and Maps

Welcome back to Kensington Cottage!  Its been a busy week around here, and it is only Wednesday!  Last week I did finish a little project that turned out better than I anticipated.  Now, you all know I recently "discovered" Mod Podge, and I fell in love!  After finishing my map covered box, (in case you missed it, you can see it here) I had lots of little scraps of maps.  A month or so ago I picked up some foam balls at Goodwill for next to nothing.  I wasn't sure what I would do with them, but then I saw these vase filler eggs that Marian at Mustard Seed Creations had done,

and these from Jillian at The Virginia House.

It got me to thinking.  So, pulled out my paint brush, map scraps, foam balls, and Mod Podge and got to work.  I started with the foam balls, I painted on a small portion of Mod Podge, then painted it on a scrap of the maps, and stuck it together.  After a few trials and errors I realized I had to hold it in place, basically forming it in the palm of my hand.  (you know, its kinda fun pealing dried Podge off your hands.) I just kept this up, layering the map pieces till the ball was covered.  I let it sit over night and then painted on 3 coats of Mod Podge to seal the deal.  Here is what I have.

The total cost of this little project, well, I'd have to say mere pennies.  Since I paid $.50 for about 20 of these balls, and the paper was scraps, pennies.  This is a cost I can handle!!  Oh, for those of you who don't like to pay $3 for these balls at Michael's, check out your local Dollar Tree, they had a 2 pack for $1 this weekend.

To be honest, I'm not sure what I will use them for, but I do like how they turned out.  This is a really simple project, and it would look great if you did different types of maps in different colors and put them in a bowl.  Tell me, how do you think I should use them?

  3. Ha, I noticed the 2 pack of balls at the dollar store a couple days ago and passed them up. I didn't know if it was a good deal or not. I too have been wanting to mod podge some balls to use for decoration, but it's going to come after some other projects. I like how yours turned out! I

  4. I love the idea of using maps! It looks so good. I also loved the comment you just left for me. We all have different styles and I love how a blog post can spark an idea and then you can make it your own. That's the whole idea! :) I recently covered some free baseballs in sheet music, so that's another option.

(I feel the same way about Mod Podge and peeling it off your fingers. There's something strangely fun about it. We're strange birds.)

  5. Very cool balls. Or - even cheaper than the styrofoam balls at Dollar Tree are kids balls - whiffle balls, baseballs, ping pong balls...they all work.
