Last weekend we threw a surprise party for my mother in law. She turned 60 and so we had to do something special! She loves to play Scrabble so that was an easy theme. Two of my sister in laws came up with the idea, and menu late one night while they were driving across the country. ( they drove from VA to CA with 4 kids under the age of 8!) We did a little research online and found some great ideas! Here is what we did.
The Guest of Honors table. Everyone got a bowl of fresh fruit salad to start. Followed by a choice of honey baked ham or herbed chicken, with potato casserole, green beans, fresh baked rolls or sweet potato biscuits with a variety of jams and jellies.
Everyone got to take home their napkin ring, which was the first initial of their name. My SIL made these.
I made the Scrabble tile coasters, which we gave to MIL so she now has a set of coasters upstairs, and downstairs in the family room. Actually, I must give Hubby equal credit, he cut these, and then ended up putting the finish on them as well cause I was running out of time. So I only painted the letters and numbers and sanded them.
The other table. We were hoping for two round tables, but at the last minute couldn't find the second round table, so we improvised.
I made these pillows, but I am really not happy with how they turned out. I will be redoing them in the future.
Another SIL made this extra large Scrabble board. She painted it on fabric. The one game we played at the party was a team Scrabble. There were four teams of four. It was a lot of fun to see what everyone came up with! There was lots of laughter!
Humming Bird Cake my SIL made. It has pineapple, and bannana, and I think coconut and nuts. I didn't try it, but everyone who did said it was wonderful!
My personal favorite, and the cake I ask for almost every year for my birthday, Bostom Cream Pie! Yum!
Sweet Potato Biscuits my new SIL made! They tasted almost like a pumpkin spice cake, they were yummy too!
We had a lot of fun doing this party, though I don't think it was exactly a surprise to MIL, but thats okay!

Happy birthday to your MIL. We were just reminiscing when your other SIL's were out here how much we enjoyed having G & P when they visited here a few years ago.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great theme- looks like fun!
ReplyDeleteLooks fun. Great idea. My MIL loves Scrabble too. I'll have to keep this in mind for her. She just had a b-day in April so I'll have to wait awhile. Hope I don't forget. ;)
